As our two-party system has proven pretty inept at actually changing most things in the daily lives of the huge majority of Americans, no matter which party is actually in power, you should be more optimistic.

We will end up going to hell in handbaskets of our own making.

Our country was founded on freedom of the persuit of happiness. The land of opportunity. We all have a chance in America. It's up to the individual to "change things in his/her daily lives," not the governments responsibility. The government responsiblity is to preserve the system that gives each one of us that chance. That's it. We're on our own after that. Read "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand if you think that being an American should effortlessly entitle you to a certain standard of living.

If you want to change things, start by focusing less on the world's problems as a whole, and more on your little corner of it. There's a lot out there that you can't control. Stop dwelling on that. It doesn't seem to be doing you any good. Instead, just try to make sure that everything YOU touch doesn't turn to shit. That's a great starting point, and that's how we can all help turn this thing around.

Oh, I wasn't complaining, American.

I don't think I was particularly applauding either though.

Our two party system in its current state is responsible for many bad things, and very few good things. One of the worst things, in my opinion, is voter apathy.

I blame a large part of this on the way our Congress conducts business nowadays. They have mastered the art of appeasing people (they call it compromise) by attaching totally irrelevant amendments to bills (both to get them passed and failed). If every proposal had to stand solely on its own merits, quite a few more would fail and we would see our government actually be more effective than it is. Pork bills are another example of the terrible pandering our elected officials do with each other in order to get things passed that have no valid reason for passing.

Ayn Rand was a strong libertarian, by the way. She would not have our military anywhere outside the USA, even if it furthered our "pursuit of happiness" within this country.
